Driftwood on Central breaks ground on mixed-use townhomes in Grand Central District
A mixed-use townhome development in St. Pete’s Grand Central District has broken ground. Construction began today on Driftwood on Central, which is being built at the northeast corner of Central Avenue and 29th Street.
Located adjacent to China Finders, Driftwood on Central is being developed by St. Pete Development Company which is headed by Julie Kessel. Nick Janovsky, Sales & Development Director at Premier Sotheby’s International Realty, is leading sales for the project.
The development will have eleven residential units across two buildings ranging between three and four stories. A building fronting Central Avenue will feature five residential units, all of which will include ground floor retail space. These are perfect for entrepreneurs or professionals who need commercial studio space or desire a live-work setting.
Driftwood on Central’s name is derived from the property’s location between Tampa Bay and Pinellas’ Gulf beaches. Playing off of this coastal theme, the exteriors of the buildings will be comprised of mixed materials including stucco, siding, and metal with rich natural colors like burnt orange, dark wood, clean whites, and nickel.
As of today, eight of the 11 units, or 70% of the project, have been reserved. Pricing for the remaining three units begins at $640,000.
“The Grand Central District is bustling with an eclectic food, bar, and art scene that makes this area highly desired,” says Nick Janovsky in a previous interview with St. Pete Rising. “The vibes here are unrivaled and we couldn't be more excited to offer these exceptional homes.”
In recent years the Grand Central District has seen an increase of new development activity. Earlier this year, a four-unit mixed-use building at 2641 Central Avenue was completed. One of the ground floor retail spaces in that development will soon be home to The Twisted Indian.
Nearby, Six Point Row, a 19-unit townhome community that is under construction at 2611 1st Avenue North, is expected to be completed later this year. Last month, the developer, Onyx and East, announced that Six Point Row is sold out.
A few blocks west of Driftwood on Central is Gallery 3100, a 122-unit apartment building at 3100 Central Avenue. Gallery 3100 is also expected to wrap up later this year.
Construction financing for Driftwood on Central is being provided by Audrey Hirst and Rita Lowman of Pilot Bank. Ben Gelston at Canopy Builders LLC will serve as the general contractor. The project was designed by architect Michael Kramer at BSB Design.
Completion of the project is expected later this year or early next year in St. Petersburg, FL.
