A popular Sarasota-based donut shop has signed a lease for its first location in St. Pete. Five-O Donuts plans to open in the space formerly home to Uptown Snoballs at 1003 4th Street North.

Owner Christine Nordstrom, a professionally trained pastry chef and experienced baker, debuted Five-O Donuts in 2017 on Ringling Boulevard in Sarasota. The donuts were an instant success, and a second location was added a year later. Today, there are four shops in Sarasota and one in Bradenton with locations coming soon to St. Pete in December and Ellenton in early 2023.

“We are so excited to be coming over the bridge,” said Nordstrom. “It's been a goal of mine for some time to bring our ‘arrestingly good donuts’ to St. Pete.”

Five-O Donuts offers a rotating selection of more than 24 types of donuts from classic “simple” donuts to the more elaborately decorated “fancy” donuts, such as the Lump O Coal, which is available around Christmas and consists of a donut filled with brownie batter, coated in chocolate, and dusted with Oreo dirt.

Each shop has its own best-sellers, but flavors like Nutella Smores, Strawberry Shortcake, Butterfinger, and Cookies n’ Cream sell well at all five locations. A vegan and gluten-friendly line of donuts is also available.

If you and your friends are up for a challenge, customers can order a giant 10-inch donut cake that serves 6-8 people, although “some claim it only feeds 2-3 people,” said Nordstrom with a smile.

But Five-O isn’t just about donuts. If you love a caffeine kick in the morning, the donut shop also offers drip coffee, cold brew, and an espresso bar.

As for the name, “obviously when everyone thinks of donuts they think of police,” said Nordstrom. “It’s a tongue-in-cheek way that we decided to play off the cop and donut theme.”

Five-O Donuts hopes to debut this December at 1003 4th Street North in the Historic Old Northeast. The shop will be open seven days a week from 7 am to 2 pm Monday through Friday and 8 am to 3 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Be sure to follow Five-O Donuts on Instagram and Facebook to be notified when the grand opening date is announced. On the shop’s first day in business, everyone that shows up will get one free donut.
