Gateway Subs' massive hoagies are headed to South Pasadena
St. Pete’s favorite sub shop is coming to South Pasadena this summer. Gateway Subs began serving their massive gourmet hoagies last August in Historic Kenwood. Ever since, the local eatery has received rave reviews, paving the way for a second location.
Gateway Subs’ new spot will be located at 2525 Pasadena Avenue South in the Village Plaza. The space was formerly home to Pasadena Personal Training. Jenna Malowany of KW Commercial represented Gateway Subs in the deal.
“We are so excited to announce our second sub shop located right off the Corey Causeway leading to St. Pete Beach,” said owner Grant Strayer. “Our first location has received so much love from the residents of Historic Kenwood and downtown St. Pete. We cannot wait to serve the South Pasadena and beach communities.”
Playing on their proximity to the beach, the new Gateway Subs will have a fun 70s beach theme.
“We want each of our restaurants to have their own personality,” said Strayer. “For the new location, we want to have a laid-back, easy-going vibe that’ll perfectly compliment a day spent on sunny St. Pete Beach. The previous tenant left behind a few vintage signs and neon lights that we cannot wait to display.”
The 1,700 square foot sub shop will feature a menu of seven sandwiches. At the Historic Kenwood location, one of the best sellers is the Spicy Italian, which includes pepperoni, hot capocollo, ham, provolone, hot peppers, onion, lettuce, and tomato on a fresh hoagie roll.
Another popular sub is The Big Beach with ham, turkey, roast beef, onion, lettuce, and tomato.
Customers can also create their own sub. Choose a protein (or two) and pile on an unlimited amount of toppings. Tell the staff to “run it through the garden” to add lettuce, spinach, cucumber, onion, tomato, banana peppers, hot peppers, sweet peppers, pickles, artichoke, and avocado.
Finally, top your sub with one of Gateway’s twelve flavorful sauces, such as Spicy Ranch, Hot Buffalo, Honey Mustard, Horseradish Aioli, and Thousand Island.
All subs will be served on fresh bread from Cusanos Bakery out of Boca Raton. The family-owned breadmaker has been in business for over 50 years.
If you’re looking to lay off the carbs though, you can swap the hoagie for a lettuce wrap. Also check out Gateway’s menu of salads, breakfast flats, and vegan shakes.
To drink, be sure to try Gateway’s small-batch specialty coffee. Espresso drinks will be offered as well as drip coffee and cold brew. Kombucha, tea, and sparkling tonic by Olipop will also be available.
When asked about the future, Strayer said he plans to start expanding up the west coast of Pinellas County. A third location has not been confirmed, but Strayer has his eyes set on Dunedin.
Gateway Subs plans to open this summer at 2525 Pasadena Avenue South. Hours will be Tuesday through Sunday from 8 am to 8 pm. Follow them on Instagram and Facebook to stay up to date on grand opening plans and the latest sub specials.
