Authentic Mexican taqueria Jimmy's Tacos to open in the Grand Central District
Jimmy’s Tacos, an authentic Mexican eatery that was started by Jimmy Nunez over 35 years ago in Los Angeles, is expanding to St. Pete.
The family owned and operated restaurant, which relocated to Ybor City a few years ago, will join St. Pete’s Grand Central District at 2536 Central Avenue, currently home to The Foundry vintage furniture store which will stay open until the end of May.
Jimmy’s Tacos is expected to open in August.
This will be the second location for Jimmy’s Tacos. At the end of 2018, Nunez moved the restaurant from Los Angeles to an unassuming bright yellow walk-up window in Ybor City on 17th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenue.
Jimmy’s is known for its made-from-scratch tacos using generations of family recipes. It has gained popularity for its birria tacos made with beef cooked in guajillo, creating a sweet and smooky flavor, sandwiched between melted cheese in a tortilla shell. The tacos are served with a side of consommé (the beef sauce it was cooked in) for dipping and chipotle sauce.
The shrimp tacos are another big hit. The tacos are stuffed with two grilled or blackened gulf shrimp on blue corn tortillas and can be topped with either a sweet mango salsa or drizzled with a cajun remoulade.
Meanwhile, Jimmy’s standard taco selection includes al pastor (pork), carne asada (beef), chorizo (pork sausage with a kick), and pollo (chicken). All of the tacos are topped with cilantro, onion, and guacamole.
Don't want a taco? No problema. The menu also features burritos, quesadillas, taco bowls, and for dessert - three churros (fried dough) filled with cream and rolled in cinnamon and sugar.
For refreshments, Jimmy's Tacos serves house-made margaritas and sangrias, Jamaica hibiscus water, horchata (a traditional Mexican concoction made with rice, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon), draft beer, and hard seltzers.
