When Joann Fabrics closed its stores last year, many local hobbyists lost a familiar place to browse fabrics, pick up supplies, and find inspiration for their next project.
This fall, one local entrepreneur hopes to help fill that void.
September Sewing Co. will open at 11000 70th Avenue North in Seminole, offering ethically sourced fabrics, sewing classes, and a creative space designed for both experienced makers and beginners.
Owner Diana Andreyko says the business is rooted in a desire to make sewing more accessible while encouraging a greater appreciation for craftsmanship and sustainable fashion.
“I remember growing up going to Joann Fabrics with my grandma as a child. I loved going there and just touching the fabric and feeling inspired,” Andreyko said in a conversation with St. Pete Rising. “I want to create that kind of space in my own way, bringing my knowledge and expertise to help foster the next generation of sewers, makers, and entrepreneurs.”
“I'm a huge proponent of sustainable fashion and all of the practices within that,” she continued. “In the world of fast fashion, I want to teach people how sewing teaches patience, craftsmanship, and appreciation for something made by hand.”

A longtime seamstress, fashion designer, and retail professional, Andreyko brings years of entrepreneurial experience to the venture.
She and her family moved to St. Pete more than two years ago from Philadelphia, where she operated a bridal design and alterations business.
Rather than continuing solely with alterations, she decided to launch a retail concept centered around sewing education and thoughtfully sourced fabrics.
September Sewing Co. will offer a range of fabrics for both garment-making and crafting, including cotton, linen, shirting, jersey, and other textiles.
The store will also carry sewing machines, home goods, antiques, and St. Pete-themed décor.
Designed for both adults and children, the shop's classes will cover sewing fundamentals, machine operation, and beginner-friendly projects such as tote bags and pillows.
Andreyko expects class sizes to remain small, typically between five and ten students, allowing for more hands-on instruction.
The curriculum is based on techniques and lessons developed throughout her years of professional sewing experience.
“Even if you don't necessarily enjoy it, it's still such an extremely useful skill to have,” she said.

The Seminole building spans 3,475 square feet, though September Sewing Co. will occupy approximately 1,000 square feet.
The remaining area will serve as a workspace for Andreyko's fashion label, D. Andreyko, where she designs unconventional bridalwear and formal women's apparel.
Andreyko describes the store's aesthetic as a “coastal cottage vibe,” with natural lighting, an airy feel, and beach-inspired touches.
Once the business is established, she hopes to launch an online storefront offering fabrics, sewing tools, and her own sewing patterns.
She also plans to host art-focused markets in Seminole to help connect with the community and support other small businesses.
“I love being able to express my creativity through digital patterns,” Andreyko said. “One day, I’d also love to develop my own fabric line.”
September Sewing Co. is expected to open this fall.
