St. Pete’s Waterfront Parks Foundation will attempt to break a world record this weekend in Flora Wylie Park

St. Petersburg’s Waterfront Parks Foundation will attempt to break a world record this Saturday with Picnic Land in Flora Wylie Park.

Picnic Land will take place Saturday, November 18th, and will feature more than 800 pink, green, blue, and orange picnic blankets to break the world record for the Longest Continuous Picnic Blanket. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the current record was set in Canada in 2012 at a length of 7,470 feet and 4 inches.

All proceeds from Picnic Land will benefit the work of the Waterfront Parks Foundation, which, since 2012, has worked with the City of St. Petersburg to preserve, protect, and promote St. Petersburg’s downtown waterfront park system.

The Waterfront Parks Foundation’s current projects include planting seasonal flower beds, improving park lighting, installing new park benches, and the development and installation of new park swings, which will soon be located throughout the downtown waterfront parks.

The entrance fee for the event is $40 and includes a 9x10 ft blanket in one of four colors and admission for four. Attendees will be able to keep their picnic blanket.

Picnic Land will include entertainment including live jazz music performed by Al Downing Tampa Bay Jazz Association and the Henry Ashwood Jazz Project.

Sun Coast Storytellers, Great Explorations Children’s Museum and Operation Par Child Development Center will offer entertainment and activities for children.  And while it’s only November, Santa Claus is also expected to attend the event from 3:00–5:00 PM.

Other local groups such as Tampa Bay Watch, Water Warrior Alliance, and The Global Love Project will also be in attendance.

Attendees are welcome to bring their own picnic baskets, however several food trucks will also be on-site, including Latin Lunchbox, Go STUFF Urself, and Sweet Island Snow.

Picnic Land is taking place Saturday, November 18th from 3PM to 6PM in Flora Wylie Park. For more information on Picnic Land, visit the website.
