A new storefront combining a modern barbershop and tattoo-inspired streetwear has opened in downtown St. Pete.

Broken Compass Barber Co. and Iron and Ink Clothing Co., which previously shared a space at 6160 Ulmerton Road in Clearwater, have relocated their joint shop to the ground floor of the 29-story Bayfront Tower at 1 Beach Drive SE, Suite 106, which previously housed the pet grooming salon PetWorks.

Blakemore Kearney of Vector Commercial Real Estate Services represented the landlord, while Alex Kamm of Axxos Commercial represented the tenants.

“We have had a successful collaboration in Clearwater, providing a unique experience where people can get a haircut and also shop for streetwear clothing,” Iron and Ink Clothing Co. founder Jeff Baustert said in a conversation with St. Pete Rising. “We were both outgrowing the space and wanted to be closer to our customers in St. Pete.”

Baustert, a former personal trainer who founded Iron and Ink in 2014 in Minnesota, has built a large social media presence, with over 96,400 followers on Instagram and 14,000 followers on Facebook.

When Baustert moved to Pinellas County several years ago, he was not initially seeking a physical storefront, as his screen-printed shirts, shorts, hats, and sweatshirts are sold through ecommerce and retailers, including PacSun and Tillys.

However, plans changed after he met Broken Compass Barber founder Nate Lastinger, who shares a love of tattoos and a passion for the fitness lifestyle.

“We want the same thing—to bring together a community of individuals who are inspired by the clothing they wear, their unique styles, and the ink on their bodies,” Baustert said.

“For my company, I wanted a physical space but did not need a full standalone shop, so this is the perfect store model,” he added.

Lastinger, who graduated from Paul Mitchell in Tampa and previously worked at the Machine Shop Barber Company on Central Avenue, founded Broken Compass Barber in 2022.

The barbershop, located on the other side of a partition wall, offers a range of haircuts and grooming services with leather chairs, toolboxes used as cabinets, and knick-knacks Lastinger has collected throughout his travels.

According to the company website, prices at the St. Pete shop will change to reflect downtown standards and current inflation.

Broken Compass Barber is offering a 15% discount to customers through the end of July.
