Baycare buys Barnes & Noble property in west St. Pete, plans emergency room facility

A Barnes & Noble located across from the Tyrone Square Mall in west St. Pete will be converted into a freestanding emergency center.
BayCare Health System, which operates hospitals and health care centers throughout Tampa Bay, has purchased the 15,456-square-foot building at 2501 Tyrone Boulevard North from JWH Properties Inc. for $10 million, according to a deed recorded on January 29th.
This is the second Barnes & Noble the non-profit health care organization has purchased in Tampa Bay. In 2024, BayCare purchased a shuttered Barnes & Noble in Carrollwood for $10.5 million with plans to convert the property into an urgent care center.
Barnes & Noble representatives were not immediately available to confirm when the St. Pete store would close, nor whether the store would close permanently or move to another location.
The bookstore has been operating at this location in west St. Pete for 33 years.

In August 2024, Pinellas County approved issuing municipal bonds totaling $1.9 billion for BayCare's regional expansion plans, which included $30 million to finance the costs of construction, furnishing, and equipping of a freestanding emergency room facility at 2501 Tyrone Boulevard North.
The two-acre St. Pete property is less than a mile from BayCare's Urgent Care center on 66th Street North and is roughly 1.5 miles from the HCA Florida St. Petersburg Hospital on 38th Avenue North.
The closest BayCare freestanding hospital emergency department is Bardmoor Emergency Center, which is affiliated with Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater.

Freestanding ERs offer the same emergency services as traditional hospital-based ERs, but with a more streamlined process and are typically located in residentially dense communities, offering quicker access and shorter wait times.
BayCare recently announced it was building a new freestanding emergency department in south Lakeland and filed plans for a freestanding emergency department in Tampa on Dale Mabry Highway.
