After more than a decade serving the South Pasadena community, the Winn-Dixie at 6851 Gulfport Boulevard is set for a major transformation.

The store will be converted into an Aldi, joining a wave of former Winn-Dixie locations being rebranded under the German discount grocery chain following its acquisition of Southeastern Grocers in March 2024.

Plans for the 55,720-square-foot supermarket include a renovation that will subdivide the existing space, with Aldi occupying a portion of the building.

Located directly across from a Publix and Walmart Neighborhood Market, the site has long been a hotspot for grocery competition.

The building itself has a storied retail history, having housed five different supermarket brands since opening on Valentine’s Day in 1978. Originally Florida’s first Family Mart, it later became Florida Choice in 1987, Kash n’ Karry in 1992, Sweetbay in the early 2000s, and finally Winn-Dixie in 2014. With Aldi’s arrival, it will mark the sixth grocery chain to operate at the address in the past 47 years.

Other locations to be converted into Aldi include the Winn-Dixie at 11100 4th Street North in St. Pete’s Bayview Shopping Plaza, which is expected to close August 3rd, and the Winn-Dixie at 3327 Dr. MLK Jr. Street North, already undergoing renovations.

Aldi currently operates eight locations in Pinellas County, including three in St. Pete.

The company plans to invest more than $9 billion to add nearly 330 new stores nationwide by the end of 2028.

Official opening dates for the new Aldi stores have not been announced, but the chain is known for celebrating with giveaways like gift cards, coupons, and Aldi-branded merchandise for early shoppers. So, stay tuned for updates as opening day gets closer.
