Central Diner, the downtown St. Pete staple known for its no-frills breakfasts, oversized portions, and loyal following, has quietly expanded west.

The longtime neighborhood favorite, at 530 Central Avenue, has opened a second location at 2525 Pasadena Avenue South in the Village Plaza in South Pasadena.

The expansion is a big step for a spot that has been part of St. Pete’s food scene for over fifty years.

Central Diner began in 1975 as Central Coffee Shoppe, opened by John and Chris Mangels.

Over the years it became a go-to eatery for downtown workers, long-time residents, and anyone craving a dependable plate of pancakes or corned beef hash.

Their daughters, Michelle, Cassie, and Nicole, took over the restaurant in 2004 and continued running it until 2018.

Current owner Nidhi Vats, who purchased Central Diner in 2022, has kept the spirit of the original location intact.

The focus remains on simple, hearty American breakfast and lunch dishes cooked to order and served with quick, friendly service.

The downtown location still has that traditional diner feel with counter seating and an open kitchen. The new Pasadena Avenue location follows the same approach.

The space previously housed Marquise Cafe, a French concept that relocated to Treasure Island in late 2024.

The menu sticks closely to what has made Central Diner beloved for decades.

Breakfast is served all day and features pancakes that many regulars consider the best classic diner-style pancakes in the area.

John’s Special, named after founder John Mangels and perhaps the dish most associated with the restaurant, is also featured prominently. The plate includes two eggs, home fries topped with cheese, grilled onions, and a choice of bacon, ham, or sausage.

The Corned Beef Hash Special carries over from the Central Coffee Shoppe era and remains a popular choice among guests.

Other customer favorites include French toast, egg sandwiches, and made-to-order omelets stuffed with everything from gyro meat to sausage.

For lunch, the eatery offers half-pound burgers, clubs, deli sandwiches, patty melts, tuna melts, and salads.

Central Diner’s menu is intentionally simple, familiar, and welcoming at a time when many new restaurants favor elaborate concepts and dramatic presentations.

The South Pasadena Central Diner is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
