It’s official: Whole Foods announces opening date for St. Pete store

After month of anticipation, Whole Foods has officially announced an opening date for their St. Pete store | St. Pete Rising

The highly anticipated opening date of St. Petersburg’s first Whole Foods Market has been announced.

The Austin, Texas-based specialty grocery store chain has planned a grand opening of its St. Pete store for February 28th at 201 38th Avenue North.

“The store’s design draws inspiration from St. Petersburg, nicknamed the ‘Sunshine City’ for its association with sundials,” Whole Foods Market said in a press release. “A prominent glowing sun greets customers while decor elements throughout the store incorporate sun rays and a palette of warm colors.”

Opening morning, shoppers will be able to enjoy complimentary coffee and breakfast bites. The first 300 customers in line will receive a limited-edition tote bag and a Secret Saver coupon featuring offers up to $100 off.

The St. Petersburg store will feature more than 800 locally sourced products from the Southeast, curated with the help of Dustin Kennedy, Local Forager for Whole Foods Market.

Whole Foods Market’s opening marks the end of a three year journey for the new store. Whole Foods first announced that a new store was opening in St. Petersburg in March 2021.

The announcement coincided with news that the retail plaza located at 201-205 38th Avenue North had been approved for demolition to make way for a 40,000-square-foot organic grocery store and 207-space surface parking lot.

Whole Foods’ location on 38th Avenue North is the first in St. Petersburg, FL; however Whole Foods is no stranger to the Tampa Bay region: It has two locations in Tampa — in Carrollwood and the Midtown Tampa mixed-use development — and one in Clearwater.

It also operates stores in several other Florida metro areas, including Miami, Orlando, Sarasota, Fort Myers, Naples, Gainesville, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, and Destin.
