The owner of several local Asian fusion restaurants is launching a new casual fine dining concept in the Grand Central District.
Plate Sushi Grill and Lounge is bringing an exciting menu featuring Laos-style tacos, octopus ceviche, and yakitori (Japanese skewers) to the ground floor of the Arte luxury apartment building at 1601 Central Avenue, on the corner of 16th Street and Central Avenue.
The new 3,900-square-foot restaurant is the latest concept from Sean Thongsiri, who also owns Mangosteen, The Crane, The Glass Noodle, and Green Pagoda.
Plate is expected to open this summer, business partner Matt Pengtakoon shared in a conversation with St. Pete Rising.
It will join existing tenants Raining Berries, Mibella Nail Lounge and Spa, BobaVita Coffee and Boba Bar, and La Mamma Italian Gelato & Caffè.

Jake Wollman and Jon Wittner of Keller Williams’ Wittner Wollman Group represented the landlord and Eli Dioso of LQ Commercial represented the tenant in the lease transaction.
Plate will offer both small plates and entrées, featuring rice and noodle bowls, dumplings, empanadas, salads, and other dishes. Plate will also offer a wide selection of sushi.
There will also be a large bar where diners can enjoy creative craft cocktails.
As Leonard Contractors completes the interior buildout of Plate St. Pete, the team is preparing to debut the same concept on the other side of the bay.
In the coming weeks, Pengtakoon and his team will open Plate at 13134 North Dale Mabry Highway in Carrollwood.

Both locations will share the same menu offerings, though the interior design will differ, according to Pengtakoon.
The Carrollwood location, formerly Marlow’s Tavern, will feature a bar and a dining area with large semi-circle green velvet booths and globe light accents, as shown in social media teasers.
Pengtakoon will oversee both the St. Pete and Carrollwood locations but noted that it may be a couple of months before Plate St. Pete opens.
