Construction commences for youth sports center in Pinellas Park

The construction team and city of Pinellas park leaders celebrate the groundbreaking of the new sports center and park | Park & Eleazer Construction

An aging Pinellas Park youth sports park will be replaced by a new 39-acre center aimed to help develop aspiring athletes.

This week, city officials celebrated the groundbreaking of the Sprowls Horizon Sports Park at 4100 66th Avenue North.

The park currently consists of three natural grass baseball fields, a tennis court, a roller hockey rink, visitor seating, a disc golf course, and parking.

The envisioned park, named after Florida’s former Speaker of the House Chris Sprowls, will house up to six baseball and softball fields designed to mirror the Major League Spring Training fields.

There will also be a full-sized artificial turf soccer field for competitive matches and events, a community plaza, and the replacement of the outdoor hockey rink provided through the Tampa Bay Lightning Community Hockey Foundation.

The existing disc golf course will be disassembled by September 4th.

The Sprowls Horizon Sports Park, estimated to cost between $25 and $30 million, is expected to open in summer 2025.

In 2022, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis approved $13.5 million in funding for the new sports center as it will serve the underserved youth of Pinellas Park and the nearby Lealman community.

Infrastructure sales tax and American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars are also covering the costs of the new center.

The new park complex will remain a city property and be managed in partnership with the Clearwater-based Sports Facilities Companies.

Park & Eleazer Construction is serving as the general contractor.
