After announcing in September that it will build a three-story, 60,000-square-foot Women’s Pavilion at 700 6th Street South, slated to open in 2024, Bayfront Health St. Petersburg has announced plans for another expansion to its campus.

Bayfront Health St. Petersburg is teaming up with three of the state’s top medical specialists to build the new project, named Bayfront Health Medical Pavilion – Institute  Square.

Bayfront Health St. Petersburg’s new cancer and orthopedic center will be constructed on the block bounded by 5th Avenue South, 6th Avenue South, 7th Street, and 8th Street.

The pavilion will be a technologically advanced facility offering world-class care to the Tampa Bay region and beyond through partnerships with the Florida Cancer Specialists and Research Institute, one of the largest oncological providers in Florida; All Florida Orthopaedic Associates, one of the largest orthopedic practices in the state; and Women’s Care, which now counts more than 100 locations across the Unites States.

The four-story, 132,000-square-foot medical office building is scheduled to open in late Spring 2025 in the Innovation District at 5th Avenue South and 7th Street on the superblock west of the James Heart Center.

“The Bayfront Health Medical Pavilion – Institute Square ushers in a new era for our hospital and demonstrates our commitment in providing expanded access to high quality health care for our community.” said John Moore, president of Bayfront Health St. Petersburg and Senior Vice President of Orlando Health West Region. “This new facility and the partnerships that will reside within the pavilion, are examples of our dedication to becoming the premiere destination for medical care in the Greater Tampa Bay region.”

Cancer care at the new facility will be provided by multiple oncology specialists and physicians offering expertise in urogynecology, colorectal, thoracic, lung, head and neck, breast, and skin cancer treatments.

Some of its medical services, including an outpatient imaging center and diagnostic laboratory services, are similar to what Moffitt Cancer Center had intended to provide before its St. Pete expansion plan, part of a larger mixed-use development, was scuttled in September by Mayor Ken Welch. Moffitt had planned for its facility to also host clinical trials and research studies, medical oncology, hematology oncology, radiation therapy, infusion, and advanced imaging.

UPC Insurance Holdings Corp. and developer TPA Group were also involved in that $300 million proposal, which would have included a 30-story residential tower with 350 units and a 14-story hotel along with a shared parking garage. The deal fell through for various reasons, most notably TPA Group’s unwillingness to meet Welch’s demand to increase the project’s percentage of affordable rental units. TPA Group also offered just $5 million for a site appraised at $24.1 million.

Bayfront has teamed with Haskell Inc. to design and construct the Women’s Pavilion, which is expected to break ground by the end of the year.

Coupled with the Women’s Pavilion, the Institute Square project provides additional momentum for Bayfront Health, which was acquired in 2020 by Orlando Health and saw a decline in patient care and financial health.

West of downtown St. Pete, at 1800 66th Street North, Bayfront Health is building a three-story, 42,000-square-foot medical pavilion and 14,000-square-foot emergency room. Expected to open in January, the facility will include 12 exam rooms, two resuscitation rooms, six waiting areas, and an ambulance bay.
