Eight-unit luxury condo development slated for Tierra Verde waterfront

One of the last vacant multifamily lots in Tierra Verde is being developed by Tom Rodgers and Gym Wilson, longtime business partners who, beginning in 1997, have developed more than 150 waterfront homes in St. Pete Beach, Tierra Verde, and Treasure Island. Their portfolio also includes beachfront custom homes, as well as retail and marina projects.

Located at 455 Pinellas Bayway South, the gated Quiet Cove Tierra Verde community is under construction and expected to be ready for occupancy in summer 2023.

“The developers are quite well known, with previous success stories like Sunset Watch and Hidden Lagoon on Tierra Verde and Boca Sands on St. Pete Beach,” says Blanka Prusova White, sales director at Century 21 Coast Alliance, the agency handling sales of Quiet Cove’s eight units, all of which are accessed via a semi-private elevator and offer marina and Gulf of Mexico views.

Five-O Donuts bakes up first St. Pete shop on 4th Street

A popular Sarasota-based donut shop has signed a lease for its first location in St. Pete. Five-O Donuts plans to open in the space formerly home to Uptown Snoballs at 1003 4th Street North.

Owner Christine Nordstrom, a professionally trained pastry chef and experienced baker, debuted Five-O Donuts in 2017 on Ringling Boulevard in Sarasota. The donuts were an instant success, and a second location was added a year later. Today, there are four shops in Sarasota and one in Bradenton with locations coming soon to St. Pete in December and Ellenton in early 2023.

“We are so excited to be coming over the bridge,” said Nordstrom. “It's been a goal of mine for some time to bring our ‘arrestingly good donuts’ to St. Pete.”

The Canary continues the 600 block’s rich heritage of unique establishments

The Canary continues the 600 block’s rich heritage of unique establishments

Opening on Thursday, November 10th, at 655 Central Avenue, The Canary Home & Gift is the creation of Allie Padin, who studied art in college and has brought an artist’s sensibility to The Canary’s creatively curated collection of merchandise, which runs the gamut from furniture, rugs, and light fixtures, to gifts for all ages such as puzzles, picture frames, tablewares, coffee table books, toys, specialty food items, and much more.

“Gift giving is an art,” Padin says. “Receiving gifts has always been a bit complicated for me, but I absolutely love looking for and giving personal and unique gifts to others. It’s a joke in our family that whenever you get a gift, before you’re allowed to peel back the wrapping paper, you have to hear all the zany little anecdotes about the procuring of the gift from the giver… what happened when they were trying to park, who they ran into inside the store, how they accidentally swapped their shopping bags, etc. These are all the wonderful little things that happen with shopping at small businesses in your town, which is something we should all take pride in!”

Affordable housing for teachers may be developed near Mirror Lake in downtown St. Pete

Affordable housing for teachers may be developed near Mirror Lake in downtown St. Pete

The former Tomlinson Adult Learning Center near Mirror Lake in downtown St. Petersburg could be redeveloped into housing for employees of Pinellas County Schools.

According to a Request for Proposals (RFP) issued on Tuesday, the School Board of Pinellas County says there’s a shortage of workforce housing for teachers and staff members, and redevelopment of the 1.7-acre site, located at 296 Mirror Lake Drive, could bring much-needed affordable rental units while simultaneously preserving the three-story, 40,942-square-foot Tomlinson Building.

While the construction of new workforce housing is a main priority for the School Board, the historic building itself could be utilized in a number of ways, including “transforming it into a housing, business, entertainment, or mixed-use facility.”

Little’s to cook up sliders, tenders, fries, and shakes in north St. Pete

From Sparkman Wharf in Tampa to new cafes being planned by St. Petersburg’s Kahwa Coffee, shipping containers have become a cost-effective, fast, and eye-catching way to get a retail or restaurant business up and running.

The latest concept to embrace the shipping container aesthetic is Little’s, a drive-thru restaurant serving sliders, tenders, fries, and malted milkshakes with a projected opening in early 2023. It will be located at the northwest corner of the intersection of 4th Street North and 87th Avenue near the site of Terraces at 87th, a 92-unit townhome community being developed by Belleair Development Group. Jake Wollman and Mark Stanton of KW Commercial represented Little’s in the lease transaction.

Little’s — the name is inspired by the Chicken Little folk tale — is the result of a collaboration between entrepreneur and long-time St. Pete resident Brian P. Butler and Colby Restaurant Group, a company founded by Butler’s lifelong friends Craig and Mike Colby, twin brothers who operate several Red Robin, Walk-Ons Sports Bistreaux, Chuck Lager’s American Tavern, and Colbie’s Southern Kissed Chicken franchises.

13-story boutique hotel with significant food and beverage focus revealed for the EDGE District

At the beginning of 2020, there were around five new hotels planned for downtown St. Pete. Then COVID-19 hit and financing for new hotel construction dried up. Most of the proposed hotels were either reconfigured into apartments or scrapped altogether. Only two hotels found a way to move forward.

Today, with COVID under control and the world beginning to travel again, hotel financing has opened back up and downtown St. Pete is once again in need of additional hotel rooms.

A new 114-key boutique hotel with a significant food and beverage focus has been proposed for the EDGE District of downtown St. Pete. And once the hotel debuts, it will be one of the most opulent hotels in all of St. Petersburg.
