23-story apartment building proposed for 17th Street near Tropicana Field in St. Pete

A 23-story apartment building has been proposed for 17th Street South in downtown St. Pete.

Plans for the building were submitted by Apogee Real Estate Partners, which is led by John Stadler and John Barkett, and will feature 204 apartments, 6,000 square feet of ground floor commercial space, and a 300-space parking garage.

It will be located at 155 17th Street South at the northwest corner of 17th Street South and the Pinellas Trail and will be adjacent to Modera St. Petersburg, a 20-story apartment tower that is under construction at 201 17th Street South. An existing on-site warehouse will be demolished to make way for the new development, however the neighboring Vertical Ventures climbing gym is not expected to be impacted.

Tesla proposes 100,000 square foot facility in St. Pete

Tesla Motors has proposed an expansive sales, service, and delivery center in St. Pete.

The electric vehicle company is under contract to purchase a 4.21-acre site at 4601 34th Street North. The property features an existing 100,000 square foot building that previously operated as a Kane’s Furniture liquidation center.

According to plans submitted to Pinellas County, Tesla will renovate the former Kane’s Furniture building with a 3,000 square foot showroom fronting 34th Street, a 35,000 – 45,000 square foot service center dedicated to maintenance and repairs, an 8,000 – 10,000 square foot parts department, and a 50,000 square foot vehicle storage facility.

The property resides in the Lealman Community Redevelopment Area Plan which was created to promote redevelopment and spur revitalization of blighted conditions and improve the overall quality of life.

St. Pete’s favorite sub shop is coming to South Pasadena this summer. Gateway Subs began serving their massive gourmet hoagies last August in Historic Kenwood. Ever since, the local eatery has received rave reviews, paving the way for a second location.

Gateway Subs’ new spot will be located at 2525 Pasadena Avenue South in the Village Plaza. The space was formerly home to Pasadena Personal Training. Jenna Malowany of KW Commercial represented Gateway Subs in the deal.

“We are so excited to announce our second sub shop located right off the Corey Causeway leading to St. Pete Beach,” said owner Grant Strayer. “Our first location has received so much love from the residents of Historic Kenwood and downtown St. Pete. We cannot wait to serve the South Pasadena and beach communities.”

An $80 million environmental research center is coming to St. Pete

St. Petersburg is once again paving the way for environmental research. Thanks to funding efforts by local leaders and state legislators, the University of South Florida is planning a new environmental research center on its St. Petersburg campus - with a budget of $80 million.

The Center of Excellence in Environmental & Oceanographic Sciences will serve as a hub for pressing issues such as climate change, sea level rise, and environmental disasters. The northwest wing of the College of Marine Science, located at 830 First Street South, will be demolished to make way for construction. A four-story building will stand in its place, with research labs, classrooms, and teaching areas for future graduate and undergraduate studies.

The center will introduce unique programs for the university, from environmental chemistry degrees, coastal and ocean engineering majors, and more. Funds for the project will also be used to renovate the remainder of the existing Marina Science Complex.

The new 1,200 square foot shop will sell and serve an impressive selection of over 100 orthodox-grade teas. An array of options will be offered within each of the popular tea varieties, such as white, green, black, oolong, pu-erh, rooibos, mate, and herbal. Local deli Brooklyn South expands in the EDGE District

For those familiar with the businesses along Central Avenue, there’s no doubt that Brooklyn South rings a bell. The meat and cheese-focused deli has been operating in the same EDGE District location at 1437 Central Avenue for eight years. Thanks to years of success, the shop decided to expand into the adjacent storefront when it recently became available.

The original owner, Matt Bonano, was a New York transplant who opened the deli and named it after his belief that the local area reminded him of the “Brooklyn of the South.” While not necessarily focused on “New York-style” cuisine, Brooklyn South brings a variety of fresh sandwiches, charcuterie boards, international meats, cheeses, accouterments, and libations to downtown St. Pete.

Construction has begun on a mixed-use building at 2700 Central Avenue in St. Pete’s Grand Central District.

Simply known as 2700 Central, the project is being developed by MTB Urban, a sister company of builder Modern Tampa Bay Homes, and will feature three 3-bed and 3.5-bath homes ranging between 2,500 and 4,500 square feet. Five months after demolition commenced, the former St. Pete Police Department headquarters is now completely razed paving the way for a new mixed-use project in downtown St. Pete – Orange Station at the EDGE.

The project will feature five buildings containing 50,000 square feet of Class A office space, 14,000 square feet of ground-level retail, and over 100 residential units. A 600-space parking garage will also be included with 400 of those spaces open to the public.

A 16-story tower facing Central Avenue will house 61 modern condominiums named The Residences at Orange Station. Additionally, a 42-unit workforce apartment building named The WYE will be situated off 1st Avenue North.
