St. Pete Beach's first independent bookstore, Read the Waves, set to open later this year

St. Pete Beach residents and visitors will soon be able to enjoy an experience that’s becoming rarer and rarer in these times: perusing the shelves of a locally owned, independent bookstore.

Read the Waves is coming later this year to 423 Corey Avenue, a space that was formerly home to Curvy Mermaid, which moved a few doors down, and As Above So Below Metaphysical Shop, which relocated to the Dolphin Village shopping mall.

The new bookstore was founded by April Elliott, a native of Dallas, Texas, who was a journalist before going to law school at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and then working as a criminal defense attorney in Colorado.

Opinion: It’s time to advocate for missing middle zoning

Opinion: It’s time to advocate for missing middle zoning

The opinions expressed in this article are those of the author, Jillian Bandes, and do not necessarily reflect the opinions or views of St. Pete Rising.

For several years now, we have followed the implementation of NTM-1, a zoning designation that would legalize the construction of two, three, and four-family homes along certain transit corridors.

St. Pete City Staff has started the process of getting approval to apply NTM-1 to the fronts of major corridors. This would affect a small number of parcels – about 3,000.

A new cocktail bar Tequila Daisy will bring over 150 tequilas, mezcals to downtown St. Pete

A new cocktail bar Tequila Daisy will bring over 150 tequilas, mezcals to downtown St. Pete

Fans of Mexico’s signature liquors — tequila and mezcal — will want to check out Tequila Daisy, a new craft cocktail bar set to open this summer on the ground floor of ONE St. Petersburg at 120 1st Avenue North, across from the Sundial parking garage.

Tequila Daisy — the name was inspired by the margarita, the classic tequila cocktail whose name means “daisy” in Spanish — is the latest concept from the owners of other downtown St. Petersburg hotspots, including Pour Judgement, Whiskey Exchange, and One Night Stand. They envision it as having an upscale neighborhood bar feel during the week, with DJs and dancing on the weekends.

“We’re going to be a craft cocktail bar,” co-owner Monique Grespan tells St. Pete Rising, “but we’re trying to step away from what you traditionally see in a cocktail bar, such as dim lighting, leather, copper, that kind of thing.”
