A Brazilian-born brand that specializes in açai bowls and smoothies has set an opening date for its first location in Tampa Bay.

Oakberry will welcome guests to its newest shop at 205 1st Street North in downtown St. Pete on Monday, January 27th. A grand opening is scheduled for 11:00 am on Saturday February 1st, where the first 100 customers will receive a free açai bowl.

The space that Oakberry occupies was formerly home to HaleLife Bakery, which relocated to the Warehouse Arts District last year.

The St. Pete shop is owned by local St. Pete resident Sarah Schermerhorn Murphy, who was introduced to the Oakberry brand while playing competitive volleyball matches in Brazil and California, where the company has a major presence.

“My teammates and coaches from Brazil taught me about açai,” said Schermerhorn Murphy.

Most Americans have likely never experienced açai outside of a smoothie bowl topped with fruits, chocolate chips, granola, nutella, and coconut flakes.

However, açai is a small, dark purple berry that grows in rainforests in Brazil. The pulp of the açai berry is a natural antioxidant that contains minerals like potassium, calcium, and vitamin E, as well as healthy fats like omega 6 and 9.

While there is no shortage of cafes serving açai bowls in St. Pete, Oakberry’s uniqueness comes from the specific sourcing and serving of its açai.

Oakberry uses 100% organic açai sourced from the heart of the Brazilian Amazon in the state of Pará, Brazil.

Although most American-based shops blend their açai with other fruits and additives for stability and consistency, Oakberry only adds organic natural sweeteners like organic brown sugar and organic blue agave syrup to its açai.

Customers can build their own açai bowl, choosing from around 22 various mix-in’s and toppings, or opt for one of the signature açai bowls.

Toppings include various types of granola, nut butters, nuts, fruits, seeds, sweeteners, and more.

One of the signature açai bowls, the Crunchy, layers açai with chia pudding, granola, strawberries, blueberries and cocoa nibs.

The smoothie selection includes six options like Coffee Punch, made with açai, frozen banana, and a shot of premium coffee powder; and Super Glow, which contains açai, coconut milk, strawberries, and collagen.

Oakberry also sells its own protein bars with flavors like coconut, peanut butter, and banana.

Today, Oakberry has 800 stores in over 45 countries. The company is pursuing additional store locations in regions throughout North America.
