Pinellas County approves $8 million for 164 new affordable apartments

Two new residential projects that will create 164 affordable housing units are poised to receive millions of dollars through Pinellas County taxes and other funding sources. 

This week, Pinellas County Commission Commissioners unanimously approved two separate funding requests for the 80-unit Flats on 4th apartments in St. Petersburg and the 84-unit Cypress Grove Apartments in Largo.

Archway Partners, an affordable and workforce housing real estate company with offices in Miami and Orlando, will work with Pinellas County and both cities to invest more than $69 million in the two apartment communities.

Plans filed and renderings revealed for 49-story Waldorf Astoria Residences

New details and preliminary renderings have been revealed for a proposed five-star hotel-branded luxury condominium tower planned for 150 2nd Avenue South in downtown St. Pete.  

Last month, the owners of the 12-story City Center office building sent a notice to its tenants that they were exploring redevelopment opportunities for the building’s six-story parking garage. The office building would not be impacted by the redevelopment.

It was later reported that the owners were planning a luxury condominium tower branded under the Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts name as the Waldorf Astoria Residences St. Petersburg.

A new steak and seafood restaurant is coming to north St. Pete in early 2025.

The Blu Halo Restaurant and Bar in Tallahassee will open a second location at 221 Main Street North on the ground floor of Park & Main, the recently completed 17-story luxury apartment complex in Carillon Park’s Echelon City Center.

Park & Main is the newest residential building to open in the master-planned neighborhood, which will contain 2,300 multifamily units (of which 700 are already completed), a 120-key extended stay hotel, 150,000 square feet of retail, and 20,000 square feet of office space once complete.

Traditional Mexican restaurant Guac n' Cheese will open its first St. Pete location in downtown St. Pete this October.

Guac n’ Cheese Mexican Grill will replace restaurant and bar King State, which abruptly closed in April after only three months of business, on the ground floor of the COhatch coworking building at 15 8th Street North.

The restaurant, which operates at 4101 MacDill Avenue South in Tampa, is known for its popular Queso Fundido appetizer, a bowl filled with oven-melted cheese topped with chorizo that is served with chips.

Mexican restaurant chain Qdoba to open on 4th Street

Qdoba Mexican Eats, a restaurant chain known for its build-your-own burritos and bowls, is opening its first St. Pete location on 4th Street North.

The Denver, Colorado-based chain plans to open at 1330 4th Street North next to the Pearle Vision eye care center in the space formerly occupied by Bolay Fresh Bold Kitchen. Curated bowl and pita restaurant CAVA and an AT&T store are also located in the plaza.

Chris Gannon, son of Outback Steakhouse Founder Tim Gannon, opened Bolay on 4th Street in 2021 in the 4,800-square-foot building. Bolay permanently closed earlier this year.

Controversial 60-unit residential development approved for church property in west St. Pete

After a four-hour discussion about a new residential development proposed for the quiet Old Pasadena neighborhood in west St. Pete, St. Petersburg City Council voted to approve the contentious project. 

During a Thursday meeting, the council members cast a 5-2 vote, approving the Pasadena Community Church's appeal of a prior denial to rezone the property at 6942 1st Avenue South. The rezoning will allow Indianapolis-based developer Onyx+East to build a 60-unit residential development containing 40 townhomes and 20 single-family homes on the site. 

Councilmembers Copley Gerdes and Councilmember Lisset Hanewicz cast the opposing votes. Councilmember John Muhammad was absent.

Whiskers Workspace, St. Pete’s first-ever cat-friendly co-working space that lets you play with adoptable cats while you work, opens August 15th at 4699 Central Avenue.

"We cannot wait to introduce Whisker’s Workspace to the St. Pete community," said Diane Emery, who owns the two-story brick building alongside other partners.

Whiskers Workspace will have seven rooms, including the Whiskers Oasis room for the public to play with the feline friends. Visitors can reserve the room for $15 per hour for up to three hours.

Mexican-inspired No View Bar to replace Grillin N Chillin on St. Pete Beach 

A pair of seasoned restaurateurs will be taking over the Grillin' N Chillin' space on St. Pete Beach with a new concept. 

Business partners Austin Forsythe and Devynn Maurer are planning to open No View Bar, a new Mexican-inspired restaurant and bar, at 6708 Gulf Boulevard

The duo is subleasing the building from Jay Bowrey, owner of Grillin’ N Chillin’, a barbeque joint that currently operates in the space. 

Beginning in September, No View Bar will share the kitchen and dining space with Grillin’ N Chillin’ before fully taking over the building when Bowrey's lease expires in early 2025.
