A whiff of autumn air, the pages of an old book, a hint of amber and leather. Each scent tells a story.

Soon, downtown St. Pete will have a new place to explore those stories when Super Memory, an intimate fragrance boutique, debuts on Saturday, November 22nd.

The brainchild of Merryck Walker, Super Memory will open at 600 1st Avenue North, Suite 103, in a space once part of the Reflection condo sales center.

Inside the shop, visitors can sit at a four-seat fragrance bar, choose a flight of scents to test, and experience more than 60 varieties of niche and indie fragrances, many of which are unavailable anywhere else in the Tampa Bay region.

A record player spinning vinyl will add to the shop’s immersive atmosphere.

“Mostly every scent we will carry will be unisex,” she said. “But the variety ensures there’s something for everyone.”

Prices range from $40 to $300, depending on the rarity of the ingredients, the craftsmanship behind each scent, and the size of the bottle.

In a time when so much shopping happens online, Walker believes fragrance demands a personal touch.

“I struggle buying perfume as an enthusiast because I don’t want to spend $200 on a bottle of perfume and not know what it smells like on me,” she said.

“Sephora, Ulta, and Neiman Marcus have historically dictated what most people smell like. But there is so much more in the world of perfume.”

Super Memory aims to change that.

While the initial focus will be on perfume, Super Memory plans to expand into candles, incense, room diffusers, and even high-end laundry detergents.

Walker also hopes to collaborate with local makers to carry select home goods and eventually release her own line of fragrances.

“By the beginning of year two, I’d love to start having one proprietary scent,” she said. “Certain businesses are starting to have their own scents, like the Edition in Tampa, and I’d love to do that for St. Pete businesses.”

Walker has a bachelor's degree in microbiology, with minors in chemistry and infectious diseases.

“After working for a pharmaceutical company for a few years, I became a sommelier, moved up to New York, and made wine,” Walker continued. “And for the past year, I’ve been working at Cellar Masters.”

Now, Walker is channeling her deep understanding of chemistry into the world of perfumery.

But her fascination with fragrance goes back to childhood.

“As a girl growing up, the suggestion was to only wear one perfume so that when people smell it, they think about you,” she said. “I think that’s a sweet sentiment, but those days are kind of gone. People want to have a scent for every moment now.”

Super Memory will offer one-on-one guidance, no appointment needed, to help guests find scents that feel authentic to them.

“At these other fragrance shops I visited, you could sit down at a bar and smell a variety of scents. It’s an experience,” Walker said. “That’s what I wanted to bring to St. Pete.”

Down the road, Walker hopes to introduce wine service.

For now, she’s just excited to open the doors to something new for her hometown.

“I’ve wanted to open a fragrance shop for years,” she said. “The idea came to me in 2021 after visiting boutiques like Fumerie Parfumerie in Portland and Refinery Fragrances in Nashville. I couldn’t believe we didn’t have anything like that here. Back then, opening my own shop felt like a pipe dream. But now, it’s real.”
