A new breakfast and lunch spot is preparing to open this month on Central Avenue, bringing a classic diner feel and a family-centered mission to the Grand Central District.

Dads’ Kitchen and Co. will debut at 2105 Central Avenue, next to the Speakeasy Central Kava Bar, replacing the former 2D Cafe, which closed in early 2025 after three years in business.

“We are two proud dads raising four incredible kids, building a life rooted in love, family, and community,” owners Nick Ellis and Joseph Christianson wrote on Facebook.

Ellis, a social worker, and Christianson, an experienced cook, are parents of adopted children who are both intellectually and physically disabled.

“Our journey into opening this restaurant wasn’t just about food—it was about creating something meaningful for our children and for the neighborhood we call home,” the post continued.

“As parents, we wanted to build a place that reflects the values we teach at our kitchen table every day: kindness, respect, hard work, and showing up for one another. This restaurant is an extension of our family—a space filled with laughter, connection, and meals made with care.”

The couple previously operated a restaurant in Largo called Roo Roo’s Diner, named after their oldest son. The restaurant opened in 2020 and was known for teaching disabled adults work-life skills. However, they sold Roo Roo’s Diner in 2024.

Dads’ Kitchen and Co. will be a similar concept, offering both breakfast and lunch.

Ellis said they initially looked at properties to the east, but were drawn to the appeal of the Grand Central District and how the space was largely move-in ready.

“We are hoping to add a Sunday brunch service and bring in some of our friends who are drag queens and just have a good time,” Ellis said in a conversation with St. Pete Rising.

Christianson will oversee kitchen operations and has already started finalizing the breakfast menu that will include comfort foods like biscuits with corned beef hash gravy or sausage gravy, chicken and waffles, and pancake tacos (stuffed with eggs and toppings).

There will also be a wide variety of omelets, eggs Benedicts, and heartier plates such as pork chops, plus weekend specials like steak and eggs.

Former Roo Roo’s Diner patrons will also notice familiar items on the lunch menu named after the couple’s children, such as the Roo Roo Reuben and Michael’s Chicken Tenders.

Other dishes to expect from Dads’ Kitchen and Co. include club sandwiches, shrimp baskets with homemade fries, salads, and specialty burgers, like the Central Burger, piled high with grilled onions, mushrooms, thick-cut bacon, and cheese.

Espresso drinks and teas will also be available, and the couple plans to eventually obtain a beer and wine license to offer mimosas and other brunch-friendly beverages.

“Our hope is that when you walk through our doors, you feel the same warmth and acceptance we strive to give our kids every day. This restaurant means everything to us and we’re honored to share it with you,” the couple said.

“As soon as you open the front door, you’ll hear my husband yelling from the back, ‘welcome in,’” Ellis said.

Ellis and Christianson are currently making changes to the Central Avenue space - repainting the walls, creating a new epoxy bar top, and adding family portraits of their children.

Dads’ Kitchen and Co. will seat around 40 people inside. The couple plans to add four picnic tables for outdoor dining.

The new restaurant will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. after its debut this month. Based on demand, they may extend the hours and add a weekend service.
